High School Logo Challenge in
Graphic Art Submitted by: Marguerite Alpert, Enrichment Coordinator K-12
'Rocky Hill High School art teacher, Eileen Schnyder’s advertising design students accepted the challenge to create a logo for the Rocky Hill Public Schools Explore and Soar enrichment program.
Before these graphic artists could create a logo, they needed to learn about the intent of the Explore and Soar program. The Explore and Soar program began in 1991 with the aim of extending and enriching the teaching and learning that was already happening in the classrooms. To create a graphic that represents intangible concepts requires the students to be technically proficient as well as artistically insightful.
All six pieces by these graphic artists were sent to Central Office where staff viewed and commented on the student’s work (which remained anonymous). This proved to be quite a challenge for the staff as everyone was impressed with the imagination, creativity and skill in each example.
The winner of the challenge, Michaela, designed a ligature logo using the letters “E” and “S” enlarged by a magnifying glass. The graphic was selected because the Explore and Soar program seeks to “magnify” curriculum goals in all grades and all subject areas.
The logo will be used on business cards, stationary, reports, on the Rocky Hill Public School website and for future articles appearing in the RH/Wethersfield Post. Thanks to Michaela’s diligence, the “look” of the Explore and Soar Enrichment Program has been modernized.
