Rocky Hill High School was constructed in 1980 with a rated capacity of 825. The population is approximately 750 students.

The school is a grade 9-12 comprehensive institution offering a wide variety of educational, co-curricular, and extracurricular programs. One hundred seventy (170) courses are identified by their degree of difficulty and designated as advanced placement, honors, academic or general. The curriculum is organized by departments, and is supported by a large media center, a guidance department, and special education and health services programs. Students are required to achieve 22 units of credit for graduation, 18 of which are mandated and 4 are elected. Classes average 23 students per section. More than 80 percent of the professional staff hold advanced degrees and 30 percent are trained as mentors, assessors, or cooperating teachers.

Approximately 70 percent of the graduates of Rocky Hill High School attend four-year colleges, 17 percent attend two-year colleges, 7 percent enter the work force, 4% attend other schools, and 2% enlist in the military.

Facilities
The school's facilities include an interdisciplinary computer lab, a Technology Education computer lab, two Business computer labs, two Art computer labs, an auditorium, a gymnasium, and a swimming pool.

Athletics and Club Activities
The school offers an interscholastic athletic program for boys and girls involving 23 varsity sports, 11 junior varsity sports and 4 freshman sports teams during the Fall, Winter, and Spring seasons. A variety of clubs and student activities are also offered on a voluntary basis.

Grading and Testing
The school uses a numeric grading system and a weighted class ranking. The passing grade in a course is 60 percent, the college recommending grade is 75 percent, the average required to achieve academic honors is 85 percent, and the average required to achieve high academic honors is 90 percent.

Formal and informal testing programs constantly measure student ability, aptitude, achievement, and specific skills. The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores have been at or above the state average for many years, with approximately 90 percent of the students taking the test. The Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT) is given yearly to grade ten students and our students continue to score well and to trend upward each year.

Achievements

  • An average of 25 percent of our students attain honor roll status each marking period
  • An active outreach to the community through narrative quarterly progress reports, report cards, which include behavior and performance comments, principal's newsletters, counsel letters from the Guidance Department, and the school calendar and events on the community access television
  • Cooperative program with the University of Connecticut
  • Advanced credit programs with Hartford area colleges and universities
  • Community service credit option
  • Advanced placement courses in English, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, and World Language
  • Project Lead the Way, pre-engineering course of study that spans grades nine through twelve.
