Rocky Hill High School Guidance & Counseling Department
Collage Application Process Guidelines for Filing College Applications
School Code: 070648
1) Application Deadlines: Be aware of application and financial aid deadlines (they may be different). Applications must be submitted to the Guidance Office at least two weeks before the deadline. Provide Guidance a copy of online applications. It is recommended that all applications be submitted by the December break. If it is a January 1 deadline, we must have the applications by the second week of December. FAFSA forms earliest submission date is the first of the year. FAFSA forms will be available in Guidance in December or online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.
2) Obtaining Applications: Guidance has many applications and literature on colleges. Applications can usually also be accessed online. If you cannot find an application in Guidance or online, please contact the college’s Admissions Office to request an application. The Common Application is used by many colleges, and can be accessed online at https://www.commonapp.org/
CommonApp/default.aspx. Meet with Guidance to discuss and review your selections.
3) Teacher Recommendations: Many schools will request recommendations from 2 to 3 teachers, plus a counselor. It is your responsibility to see the teachers and counselor to ask them to write a letter for you at least two to three weeks prior to filing your applications, providing them with a copy of your resume, recommendation form (if provided by the college), and follow up with a note of “Thanks.” Please ask teachers to submit completed recommendations directly to Guidance. Some schools also have Teacher Evaluation forms to be completed - please provide these to teachers at the time you ask for a letter of recommendation.
4) Preparing Your Application: Your application may be the only impression the Admissions Counselor will have of you. Expend your best effort and pay close attention when completing the application.
All applications should be filled in neatly; typing is recommended.
Make a copy of the application to use as a first draft. Once all information is correct and complete, transfer it to the original application. If online, print a copy for your records and give one to Guidance.
Spend time developing and proofreading your essay and short answers. The short answer questions are as important as the essay. Ask for help with your essays from the English Department, if necessary. Take advantage of submitting the essay, even if they say it is optional.
5) Filing Applications: It is very important to file applications as one completed packet. From Guidance, obtain and complete a Transcript Request Form for each college you are applying to. Submit form and all applications to Guidance at least two weeks before they are due. Guidance will mail your official transcript, recommendations, and supplemental forms in one envelope to the college. You must release your official SAT scores from the College Board to your selected colleges. You will need to provide Guidance with the following:
A check for the application fee (if you didn't pay online).
The application, essay and copy of online communications.
If your application requests mid-term grades, provide the forms for each college (these will be mailed at the conclusion of the first semester).
