Minutes of Meeting
A special joint meeting of the Facilities/Finance
Committees of the Rocky Hill Board of Education was held on Tuesday, November 28,
2006, in the superintendent's conference room.
Present were: Committee Chairs Peter
Arico and Anne Schmidt; Committee Members Nadine Bell, Rene Rivard, and Mark
Carberry; Board Member Catherine Vargas; Director, Board Chairman Neil Geldof;
Board Member; Director, Finance & Operations Gregory P. Turansky; Assistant
Principal Donna Hayward; and Supt. of Schools J. A.
Ms. Hayward reviewed the problems facing the high school in creating the master schedule due to insufficient lab space for the science department. Due to insufficient lab space, we currently have twelve science classes that are relocated during the week and four teachers are on “carts”. Additionally, we lack lab space for the freshman science classes (Earth Science) and general level courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and forensics. The final problem is that the scheduling of science classes to maximize lab use is impacting the master schedule in other subject areas in a negative manner.
It was the consensus of the committees that a request should be made for a modular science lab/classroom to be placed at the high school.
Administration presented information on elementary enrollments as of October 1, 2006. Dr. Vautour indicated the following areas were of concern.
Ø Kindergarten classes at Stevens/Moser are at the outside limit of the recommended guidelines (16-20).
Ø Grade 4 classes at both Stevens and West Hill are at the outside limit of the recommended guidelines (18-22).
Ø Grade 1 classes at West Hill nearly at the outside limit with an average of 19.2 (16-20).
Ø Grade 2 classes at Stevens are already at the outside limit with an average of 19.6 (16-20).
On the basis of current data, the committees determined it to be prudent to request the positioning of one modular classroom at Stevens and one modular classroom at West Hill for the 2007-08 school year.
